The systemic and economic barriers facing financial empowerment

Writer: Eleanor ColemanEleanor Coleman

As we approach International Women's Day this weekend, I recently took the opportunity to reflect on the gender parity landscape in Hong Kong with Carolyn Wright on RTHK’s Money Talk.

Research done in Hong Kong in 2018 highlighted that women aged 60 earned only 50% of what their male counterparts made, and by 2021, the wage gap remained significant at 21%. Unfortunately, archaic views persist, with many employers still hesitant to hire women with children, as highlighted by research from The Women's Foundation. According to the World Economic Forum, achieving true gender equality may take five generations. I can’t wait until my children’s children’s grandchildren have kids – can you?

These outdated perspectives hinder women's career advancement and financial security, leaving many without adequate retirement savings. To combat these barriers, we must prioritise education on financial empowerment—an essential yet often overlooked topic in schools. I shared some small steps that can create a huge impact over time in this segment. Listen to it below.
