Recovering from hip surgery has reminded me that life rarely feels “perfect” at the start of a new year. And yet, we’re often told to chase perfection, in life, in finance, and especially on social media. on The truth? Independence is built on progress, not perfection.
🔹 Progress over perfection: In Hong Kong’s fast‑moving markets, waiting for the “perfect” moment means missed opportunities. Small, steady steps, like regular MPF contributions or consistent investing, create momentum and long‑term security.
🔹 Mediocrity compounds into strength: Chasing extraordinary returns can be intimidating and unrealistic. Average, diversified results may feel ordinary, but over decades they grow into extraordinary independence, especially vital for women who retire earlier and live longer.
🔹 Safety nets matter: Emotional support from peers and mentors, alongside financial cushions like emergency funds and insurance, empower women to take risks without fear of collapse. Longer lifespans and caregiving responsibilities make these nets essential.
The lesson is simple: progress beats perfection, mediocrity builds resilience, and safety nets both emotional and financial make independence possible and life easier. Listen to me and RTHK's Carolyn Wright below.
