‘Til death do us part? The reality of divorce on your finances

Divorce is a challenging topic, from the emotional aspects to the financial decisions that need to be made when a couple decides to end their union.

In Hong Kong, courts often start with an even division of assets, then adjust based on the needs, contributions and circumstances of both parties. Trailing spouses — often those who gave up careers to relocate or raise children — also face earning power imbalances that settlements must address.

Throw in the challenge of where you lodge your divorce, there are so many wide-ranging nuances and challenges that a couple has to overcome, at a time where communication and alignment of goals simply isn’t possible. It’s tough.
